My First Scales
This scale book is intended to introduce a specific left hand frame from Open String to 3rd finger, which is most often utilized when one starts out learning to play the violin, and help students develop the ability to place fingers in a row as well as in different permutations and across several strings.
Scales, Exercises and Arpeggios are written in the keys of A Major, D Major and G Major.
An important factor to keep in mind is that all exercises are written in whole notes with 1/1 time signature. This is intentional, to help emphasize the fact that ultimately in all note durations one encounters, everything is a fraction or, in a few cases, a multiple of, the whole note. Omission of quarter notes and 4/4 time signature is significant, because many students who start out and for years to come continue to be confused by note relationships and time signatures, because from the get-go everything was related to a quarter note instead of the whole note and meter was seen as 4/4 and again, for years confusion over how to read and understand the meter continues to be a challenge for many who play the violin.
I would advise students to try to sing the notes in the following ways: humming with the aid of a piano or a tuner, while saying note names, and while saying fingerings. This combined approach will be of great help to a beginning player in emphasizing importance of listening to intonation and associating the note names and fingerings with the sounds. It increases the likelihood of a student developing perfect pitch, as well as goes a long way in developing a great relative pitch.
